Last night one of the postulants, Br. Antonio Cornier, of Holy Name Province was called on to recite the Litany of the Saints at our Easter Vigil service. What followed was both ordinary and extraordinary. Interspersed among the normal names of the saints were the names of Dorothy Day, Dr. Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi. I thought it was a fitting addition and was grateful to be reminded of their place in our service. Whose names would you include in the Litany of the Saints?

Perhaps we should also ask the victims of violence to pray for us, even those whom we do not know like those who have died in Iraq or those killed by abortion?
Oscar Romero was named in the Litany of Saints at our church.
I discovered your blog a couple of weeks ago and have been enjoying it very much!
Hi Don,
I second Oscar Romero heartily, but you know, I’d like to see some lay people canonized too.
How about Thomas Dooley and Peter Maurin?
Oscar Romero, Peter Maurin, and Thomas Dooley all belong. I think Franz Jägerstätter could also be included.
Franz Jägerstätter is an excellent suggestion. I’m thinking, however, that a Pope who thought that “everybody” needed to join the Hitler Youth is probably not going to go for that…
One the subject of popes, if they feel a need to canonize one soon, it should be John XXIII first.
Dorothy Stang should be on the list as well.
I think the Pope’s affiliation with the Hitler Youth was something that might have been required at the time. There weren’t many options for young German boys then. I hope no one holds one time membership in both the Republican and Democratic parties against me. We can grow and I hope the Pope has grown since the 1930’s. I’m not familiar with Dorothy Stang. I’ll have to read more about her. I would also include Edith Stein in the litany. :-)Don
