The Future

The future is not some place we are going, but one we are creating. The paths are not to be found, but made. And the activity of making them changes both the maker and their destination.–John Schaar

I thought this quote which came from Gratefulness.org was especially germane today in light of what has recently been reported about global warming. My heart goes out to the victims of the terrible weather disaster in Florida. I watched “Inconvenient Truth” a couple of months ago and this is precisely the kind of event that was described in that documentary. I’ve witnessed weather events in my own area which would have been quite extraordinary 30 years ago. Scharr’s quote reflects a more Franciscan view of reality. George Bernard Shaw wrote once, “beware of a man whose God is in the sky.” This is the dominant thinking here in the United States and elsewhere in western civilization. This divorce between the material and the spiritual allows so called civilized nations to rape the earth, pillage its inhabitants and murder them without conscience. We dress up and go to church on Sunday where we speak of Jesus and holiness, but the other six days of the week we justify our actions with ideas like Just War which is just war. We consume oil and gas as if there was an unending supply. Help us Lord to live simply so that others can simply live. Help us to live truly as instruments of peace.
