Ubuntu is the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity. It’s a unique and timely concept. Ubuntu’s slogan, “Linux for human beings,” is an extension of the concept. Imagine such a radical concept as an active concern for all humanity and even the world itself. It almost sounds like a concept advanced by St. Francis of Assisi. Today I helped a friend help his father in law and I used my skills and Linux to help a retired man who doesn’t really know what Linux is let alone understand Ubuntu. It’s a project that started a couple of months ago and yes I did make some money but not as much as I could have. I’ve found that putting people first in all things is far more important than putting money first. There are universal spiritual principles that govern the universe. I’ve found that you reap what you sow. I once heard that if you help others to succeed that you’ll succeed. I’ve witnessed that in my own work and life. I have to be willing to give it all away in order to keep it. I think the Buddhists refer to that as keeping an open hand. Nothing is truly mine. All that I have is provided to me by the creator and as long as I do the work he assigns me I will be taken care of.

How funny, I just wrote a post about ubuntu on my own blog 😉
I quite agree with you; I think Ubuntu is exactly the sort of social ideology that we need today. In many ways, I think we have always needed Ubuntu, but in the present time we can no longer pretend that we do not. The tail end of the 20th century, and the dawning years of the 21st, have been a progressive shattering of excuses justifying the “me first” ethic.
I also think you’re right to point out that the concept has many similarities with ideas you’ll find in Christianity and Buddhism. It’s a very spiritual notion, and the fact that similiar ideas have sprung up elsewhere I think speaks to its truth and universality.
