Exploring open source, generative AI, and the joy of lifelong learning—together.

Technology has been a fascinating part of my life for more than twenty-five years. I’ve spent much of that time teaching, writing, experimenting, and helping others discover how technology can make their lives better.

Along the way, I’ve learned something important: The most rewarding part of learning is sharing what you’ve discovered with someone else.

That’s why I’m opening a new chapter focused on mentoring, teaching, and helping people become more confident with technology.

You don’t need a computer science degree, years of experience, or even a clear idea of where to begin. All you need is curiosity and a willingness to explore.

What Can We Learn Together?

Discover Linux and Open-Source Software

I’ve been using Linux for nearly twenty-five years, and I remain passionate about the freedom, creativity, and community that open-source software makes possible.

Whether you’re considering switching to Linux, looking for alternatives to expensive proprietary software, or simply wondering what open source is all about, I’d be happy to help you explore.

We can learn about:

  • Getting started with Linux and choosing a distribution.
  • Finding free and open-source alternatives to familiar applications.
  • Using Linux for everyday computing, writing, and creative projects.
  • Understanding the philosophy and benefits of open source.
  • Becoming more comfortable and independent with technology.

My goal isn’t to turn everyone into a computer expert. It’s to help people discover tools that work for them.

Explore Generative Artificial Intelligence

Generative AI is changing how we write, learn, create, and solve problems. It’s an exciting technology, but it can also feel overwhelming.

I’ve been exploring tools like ChatGPT, Ollama, and locally hosted language models, discovering how they can support creativity, learning, and everyday productivity.

I’d enjoy helping you:

  • Understand what generative AI is and how it works.
  • Get started with ChatGPT and other AI tools.
  • Use AI as a writing, brainstorming, and learning companion.
  • Explore open-source and locally hosted AI.
  • Understand the limitations, privacy concerns, and ethical questions surrounding AI.
  • Discover practical ways AI can complement your own knowledge and creativity.

I believe AI is most valuable when it helps people think, learn, and create—not when it replaces their curiosity or judgment.

Learn to Code and Create

You don’t have to be a professional programmer to enjoy writing code or building something useful.

Python and today’s AI-assisted development tools make it possible for beginners to create small programs, websites, and other projects.

We can explore introductory Python programming, simple automation, website creation, and AI-assisted coding.

We’ll start with something manageable, build confidence, and learn through experimentation.

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s discovery.

Technology for Educators, Libraries, and Community Organizations

My background in education has shaped how I approach technology. I’ve worked with teachers, students, and educational technology, and I’ve seen how the right tools can open doors to new opportunities.

I’m particularly interested in working with educators, librarians, nonprofit organizations, and community groups that want to make technology more accessible.

Possible topics include:

  • Introduction to Linux and open-source software.
  • Generative AI for beginners.
  • Practical AI applications for educators and writers.
  • Digital literacy and lifelong learning.
  • Open-source tools for schools, libraries, and nonprofits.
  • Hands-on technology workshops for adults and older learners.

I believe libraries and community organizations are wonderful places for people to discover technology in a welcoming, supportive environment.

Writing and Sharing What You Know

Writing has been an important part of my own learning journey.

I’ve written extensively about Linux, open-source software, educational technology, and artificial intelligence. Writing has taught me that you don’t need to know everything about a subject to share something valuable.

If you’re interested in writing about technology, starting a blog, or communicating technical ideas to a wider audience, I’d be glad to share what I’ve learned.

We can explore finding topics, organizing ideas, explaining technical concepts in plain language, and developing a writing practice that reflects your own voice.

How We Can Work Together

I envision mentoring as a conversation rather than a lecture. We begin with your interests, questions, and goals, then explore what makes sense for you.

There are several ways we might work together:

One-on-one mentoring: Friendly, personalized conversations to help you get started, solve problems, or explore a new interest.

Workshops and presentations: Introductory sessions for libraries, schools, community groups, and organizations interested in open source, generative AI, and digital literacy.

Project-based learning: Work together on a practical project, whether that’s installing Linux, experimenting with a local AI model, creating a website, or learning Python.

Writing and collaboration: Exchange ideas, explore technical topics, and help turn knowledge and experience into articles, tutorials, and other learning resources.

I’m open to volunteer opportunities, community partnerships, and conversations about workshops or consulting engagements.

My Approach to Mentoring

I believe good mentoring begins with listening.

Everyone brings different experiences, interests, and abilities to the learning process. Some people are comfortable experimenting with technology, while others need a little encouragement to take that first step.

My approach is grounded in a few simple beliefs:

  • Curiosity matters more than expertise. Every question is an opportunity to learn.
  • Learning should be accessible. Technology shouldn’t be reserved for specialists.
  • We learn by doing. Small projects and practical experiences build confidence.
  • Open knowledge benefits everyone. Sharing ideas and discoveries strengthens communities.
  • Learning goes both ways. Mentoring is an opportunity for both of us to grow.

I don’t have all the answers, and I don’t expect you to either. What I can offer is experience, patience, encouragement, and a genuine enthusiasm for discovering what’s possible.

Who Is This For?

You might be a student exploring technology for the first time, an educator interested in new learning tools, a writer curious about AI, or a retiree looking for a new intellectual adventure.

Perhaps you’re a librarian planning a technology program, a nonprofit leader searching for affordable software, or someone who has always wanted to try Linux but didn’t know where to start.

You don’t have to fit into any particular category.

If you’re curious and willing to learn, you’re welcome here.

Let’s Start a Conversation

I’ve spent much of my life learning about technology, and I’m still learning every day. At this stage of my journey, I’d like to devote more of my time to helping others discover the possibilities I’ve found along the way.

If there’s something you’d like to learn, a project you’d like to explore, or a workshop you’d like to organize, I’d enjoy hearing from you.

Tell me a little about yourself, what interests you, and what you’d like to accomplish.

You can also connect with me on Mastodon, Bluesky, or LinkedIn.

Let’s be curious. Let’s experiment. Let’s learn together.
