Transitus at University Chapel

Tonight I joined other Franciscans at St. Bonaventure University Chapel in both remembering our seraphic father St. Francis and in re-committing ourselves to living out his ideals. It was a lovely liturgy and different from what I expected. This was my first time at the Feast of Transitus. St. Francis died just after sunset on October 3, 1226, at the age of 44.

“Be praised, my Lord, for our sister Bodily Death whom no living man can escape. Woe to those who die in mortal sin! Blessed are those whom she will find doing your holy will, for to them the second death will do no harm”. –St. Francis of Assisi

The Verdict

This is my tribute to Paul Newman. I saw this movie in 1982 with my wife when we were first dating. I identified with Newman’s portrayal of Frank Galvin, the alcoholic lawyer who’s own sense of right and wrong is so offended by the privileged position taken by the authorities at a large Catholic hospital that he takes on this case of a woman left in a coma by medical malpractice. It is the classic battle of good and evil.  This summation scene is powerful and one of Paul Newman’s best.

All around the world

Tonight I’m on fire I can’t stop writing and listening. I love this piece by Lisa Stansfield and Barry White. Barry was one of the greats of the 1970’s. He started making it big when I was still in the US Navy. I remember hearing his disco hits in Navy clubs and discotheques around Groton and New London, CT.  This is great and I hope you enjoy the lyrics.

Ave Maria

Long a favorite of mine is this short prayer. Today I carried a rosary in my pocket for protection from darkness. St. Francis had a special devotion to Our Lady. The mother of Jesus holds a special place in the Roman Catholic Church. It’s the missing element in fundamental Protestantism. Why this mystical element is removed is puzzling. Women are central to creation. The Jewish Ruach Hakodesh is a feminine spirit. The Jews fully appreciated the mystical significance of women in the creation. Women are relegated to lesser roles in many of the world’s religions despite the fact that if we didn’t have women we wouldn’t have any children. Men aren’t made to bear or even to raise children. Women are the nurturers. There are feminine elements in men as there are masculine elements in all women, but women excel at nurture.

Mary was the ultimate woman having born the Christ who came into the world not so much to save as to demonstrate how we were and are to live in relationship with each other. The world killed Christ as it did Gandhi, Martin Luther King, St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, and others who chose to model and follow the example of Christ. Sarah Brightman does a splendid rendition of the Ave Maria. The monks at Abbey of the Genesee end their compline prayer with a special prayer to Mary.

Chameleon

This little piece from Herbie Hancock has been one of my favorites and I came across it a while back.

He was ahead of his time. This concert was recorded over 30 years ago.

Slacker Uprising

I got a note from a group I belong to about a new movie by MIchael Moore entitled “Slacker Uprising.” You can download the movie for free at SlackerUprising.com. Here’s the trailer which is pretty entertaining.

Go Mr. Cohen

This short video clip is priceless and begs interesting parallels between McCain-Palin and Obama-Biden.

3000 feet above SBU

Yesterday I took this picture with my Kodak camera as I was flying over the campus of St. Bonaventure University. St. Bonaventure is situated next to the Allegany River and is adjacent to the Village of Allegany which is also pictured. I was at 4500 feet which is a little over 3000 feet above ground level. It was a beautiful night to be aloft.

Values voters

The financial crisis is affecting lots of people and even some traditional Republicans, who for years have endorsed the lack of regulation that created this disaster have had enough. It turns out that decency and honesty which are real values were missing in the halls of big business and the halls of congress. I cannot remember a President since Jimmy Carter who really held big business’ feet to the fire. Many of the conservatives idolize Ronald Reagan and while he was preferable to our current occupant of the White House he was no paragon of virtue either. Reagan was going to get government off everybody’s backs and he began to strip away the regulations that had been put in place after the Great Depression. With Reagan we had Iran-Contra where we were actually trading arms for hostages. Ollie North and John Poindexter were lying to Congress. Then came Bush 41, who was at heart an excellent man but he too was surrounded by individuals who led in time to the savings and loan debacle. Then came Clinton who was brilliant and had some bright minds around him but the Republicans spent more time investigating whether a White House intern had sex with Clinton and whether he’d done something illegal in an Arkansas land deal. None of those incidents taken together have had the negative impact of the current fiscal fiasco.

The party of Barry Goldwater has slipped a long way from a party of principled politicians to group of hacks and criminals more intent on lining their own pockets and those of corporate executives than of really protecting the interests of average Americans. I love it when these crooks preface their remarks with “the American people.” They don’t give a damn about the real American people. The United States faces a landmark election, an election as important as any in our history. You can bet the Republican dirty tricksters who have already been gerrymandering will try to rig yet another election. Be prepared for more voter fraud and hanging chads. They will not give up easy. I hope and pray everyday that real Americans can restore our country to its proper place in the world and at home.
