Today was the 59th anniversary of the assassination of one of the true saints of the 20th Century. January 30, 1948 Mahatma Gandhi was murdered by a Hindu extremist. Gandhi died almost five years before I was born. I regard him as one of my heroes. His death and that of Martin Luther King Jr. remind of the passage from St. John’s Gospel. “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.”
