‘To your descendants I give this land, from the wadi of Egypt to the Great River, the river Euphrates.’ This line is taken from Genesis and is part of today’s first reading at Mass. I was struck by the poignancy of the line given the fact that our country and it’s soldiers are embroiled in a conflict with Abram’s ancestors as identified by God in our Bible readings today. We have invaded land that was given to Abram and his descendants by covenant with the Lord God.
Is it a stretch to believe that perhaps the Iraqis be they Sunni or Shia are actually Abrams’ descendants and we have not only illegally invaded and occupy their land. Could that be the real issue at hand? Is this the crux of our problem? This was the reading I was asked to do today at Mass and it just got me thinking. I wonder what you get out of this. Peace.
