Word processors

I’ve been giving a lot of thought lately to the importance or relative unimportance of word processors. I learned how to process words with a pencil. Nowadays word processing has come to mean more than writing, but is it? How many of today’s word processors are more about formatting text than actual aids to written dialogue. In this day of blogs and wikis are elegant word processors really necessary. How important are open formats and standards to the overall process of information sharing and do students need to learn one software package to the exclusion of others?
