The surge is working?

I spent a few minutes watching Mike Barnicke sitting in for Chris Matthews on Hardball. Today’s topic among others on the pr ogram was, “Is the Surge Working?” Mike interviewed some arm-chair general who is a paid consultant for MSNBC. I can’t remember the general’s name and that’s not important. What is important is the surge is working. Today, our newest Republican candidate for President, Hillary Clinton assured us that the surge is working. I love it when apologists for President Bush assure us that the surge is working. If Hillary had performed her constitutional duty in October 2002 there wouldn’t be a surge now. Politicians never have solutions unless you think a solution is talking about a solution. There’s an old expression in my area of the country, “money talks and bullshit walks.”

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”–Joseph Goebbels.

Lately the varnish has been coming off the lies. On Sunday, members of the 82nd Airborne, a respected corps of American soldiers disputed the truth of the surge. They’ve been discredited by pundits as notable as Tucker Carlson. Tucker ought to know if the surge is working. There has been no end to the surge of speculation and happy thinking that he’s been doling out. I particularly enjoy it when Chickenhawks like Tucker seek to discredit actual fighting men. Here’s a guy with a yellow streak a mile wide disputing the opinion of men in the field. I have to wonder how a guy like Tucker managed to absent himself from military service. You’d think that someone of his ilk with his strong feelings for war ought to have served. He’s only thirty-eight years old. A guy who feels this strongly about the war ought to get a chance to go. Maybe after Tucker embedded himself with the 82nd we could have an unbiased report on whether these guys are telling the truth.

Here have a look for yourself as Tucker Carlson cheap shots the 82nd Airborne.
