Rediscovering the Rosary

A fellow Secular Franciscan has asked that I plug his book on this blog. That sounds like a great idea. Antony Outhwaite, SFO of Mountain Top, Pennyslvania has written a book, “Rediscovering the Rosary”, it is available at Amazon.com and at Lulu Press. I carry a Franciscan Crown Rosary with me in the car. During Lent of 2005 I made a committment to pray the rosary everyday. I followed through on it. It seemed more meaningful than giving up eating chocolate or some other foolishness. Our Secular Franciscan spiritual assistant, Fr. Lou McCormick, OFM had challenged us to try something innovative for Lent. Saying the rosary everyday was my contribution. Thank you Anthony for your work and the email. Peace.

Who owns Christianity?

I used to wear a WWJD, bracelet. It was a great idea and it was one of those things that helps one to examine their behavior. I came across well written piece from the San Francisco Chronicle. It seems to me that the term Christian nowadays connotes a narrow minded increasingly war like persona that is anathema to Christ’s teachings. The root of Christianity has been severed and in it’s place an increasingly narrow, hate filled minority have hijacked the real Gospel message. It seems as though the chaff has taken over the field and thrown the wheat into the fire.

I liked this piece written by Deepak Chopra that appeared in the July 17th issue of the San Francisco Chronicle. “Did Christ teach love or is that just a liberal bias? In the current climate, it’s hard to remember, but one thing is certain: Once a tight cabal of fundamentalists takes over any denomination, Christ’s teachings go out the window. The reversal of Christianity from a religion of love to a religion of hate is the greatest religious tragedy of our time.”

The center will not hold

I came across a well written piece today in my net travels and I thought it was worth pointing you in that direction. “The center isn’t holding so well here, either. When idealists of both parties ran away from politics–under the impact of Watergate, fundamentalism, corruption, conservative smear tactics, and general apathy–the center became hollow. Just recently in Congress the Republicans blocked the renewal of voting rights, refused to raise the minimum wage, gave a windfall to the very richest people through the estate tax, and endorsed a military presence in Iraq with no scheduled end in sight. . Is it possible that average Americans, who see themselves as centrists, could agree with this kind of governance?”

Internet Monk

Internet Monk is offering a free podcast of Thomas Merton. It’s very cool to know that Merton is still causing such a stir in the evangelical community. I haven’t listened to much of the podcast but so far it is interesting. Contemplative prayer gets short shrift in much of the evangelical community. There are many from that paradigm of Christianity that see contemplative prayer as New Age.

Sage a Feed Reader For Firefox

I’m learning how to write an RSS feed for the school district I work at. Naturally, I had to check out my work to make sure that it looked okay. In doing so I needed to install a feed reader. I discovered one that’s easy to use and install. It’s called Sage Feed Reader and it developed my the Mozilla folks. I recommend it to you.

Ignatian Reflection On Love

This came from a young man spending the summer in service to others at Mt. Irenaeus. He was kind enough to forward it to me on email tonight.

Nothing is more practical than finding God,
That is, falling in love in a quite
absolute way

What you are in love with,
What seizes your imagination
Will affect everything.

It will decide what will get you out of bed in the morning
What you will do with your evenings,
How you spend you weekends
What you read, who you know, what breaks your heart,
And what amazes you with joy and gratitude
Fall in love, stay in love, and it will decide everything

Missing you

Today, I bought one of those $5 albums at the checkout counter. It’s entitled, “Ladies Got Soul”, and it has some all time soul favorites like Aretha Franklin, Evelyn Champagne King, Gloria Gaynor and Diana Ross. Listening to the album brought back a flood of memories from 20 and 30 years ago. I grew up listening to the Motown Sound. I came across a nice tribute to Marvin Gaye, Paul Williams and Florence Ballard. I thought you might enjoy it also.
