I’m a Ubuntu Linux user and a Ubuntu affiliate. I’m always looking for ways to use open source software and I’ve often thought that the open source philosophy is very biblical. There is a real tie to relationship with others in the open source community. Today in my reading I came across a wonderful story about how a poor man in San Francisco was helped at St. Anthony’s, a Franciscan mission to the poor and homeless much like St. Francis Inn where I volunteered last summer. St. Anthony’s networks with some other Bay Area ministries and tries to help the less fortunate gain the skills they need to obtain a higher paying job. The Shift Movie
I came across this great video after reading an article by Deepak Chopra on Huffington Post today. There is change brewing and this video gives some thought to that.

Is there an Ibiza Ecomotive in your future?
Plainfoolish has a great response to one of my earlier comments and I just happened to find the following article on Treehugger’s RSS about an Ibiza Ecomotive. This is worth reading about and maybe there will be one in your future. I’d like to see tax incentives given to people willing to forego large automobiles. Tax credits ought to go to those individuals and businesses that actually conserve fuel. Instead of taxing fuel, tax those who waste it. The more you save the less you get taxed. What a novel concept?
So unlike your Christ
I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. They are so unlike your Christ.–Gandhi
Earlier in the week I wrote about an archbishop’s decision to withhold a sacramental rite from a politician got me to thinking again about some of the apparent contradictions between the prophetic church and the pathetic church. Continue reading “So unlike your Christ”
Feast day
Today is the feast of St. Francis of Assisi.
Three eared rabbits and such
One of my best friends told me today he preferred to read about the three eared rabbit and less about Iraq. I haven’t seen my dear three eared friend in a couple of months which makes me wonder if he’s been eaten by one of the darned cats in our neighborhood. Continue reading “Three eared rabbits and such”
No communion for you..
The Archbishop of St. Louis has stooped to a new low in threatening Rudy Giuliani with “no communion,” because of his stance on abortion. That really doesn’t strike me as something Jesus would do. Communion for most Christians even nominal ones is a sacramental rite and it was never meant as a reward and or punishment. I guess this just goes to show that even bishops can do dumb things. I’m not a supporter of Mr. Giuliani either but I think it shows some real shortsighted thinking on the part of the church and the archbishop. If communion really is the body of Christ and I believe it is, doesn’t that hold some hope as a change agent in Mr. Giuliani’s life? I think it does. In the first Eucharist even Judas receives communion and I think that’s the standard that Jesus set.
Gettin deep..
There’s an expression in my part of the world, “gettin’ deep” which literally means the baloney is on overload. Today in a story reported on Huffington Post, John McCain says he’d prefer a Christian president since this nation was founded on Christian principles. Continue reading “Gettin deep..”
Scarlet and black
This is one of my favorite movies and one of the final scenes from the movie. The movie is based on the real story of Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty.

Counter to God’s law?
“We need to be very precise then, about what I said wearing my stars and being very conscious of it,” he added. “And that is, very simply, that we should respect those who want to serve the nation but not through the law of the land, condone activity that, in my upbringing, is counter to God’s law.”–General Peter Pace.
I want to know where in God’s law it says that killing your fellow man is moral. Continue reading “Counter to God’s law?”
