Turn Away from Sin and be Faithful to the Gospel

I just got back to my sister’s home from Mass at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Tempe, AZ. I really got a huge helping of ashes. These Arizonan’s aren’t stingy with ashes. Today we visited the Arizona Desert Botanical Gardens and while contemplating today’s readings I thought of another of my favorite quotes from Scripture, Hosea 2:14, “I will lead you into the desert and there I will speak to your heart.” This afternoon at Mass the lady who imposed ashes onto my forehead said, “turn away from sin and be faithful to the gospel.” The two quotes have been with me much of today. At Mass I thought about what is sin in my life and how I might more fully live the gospel. At the prayer for the faithful at Holy Spirit we prayed for an end to abortion and euthanasia. I wondered why we didn’t pray for an end to war. Loving my enemies is part of the gospel too. How can I better love those who would do me harm? How can I turn their hate into love? Peace.

  1. Blessings to you this Lenten season Don.

By the way, wonderful posts you’ve been putting up about the sitation in Iraq. One of these days I’m like to put together a list of some of them to point out to others, if you don’t mind.

  2. Don,

I thought that back from your earlier posts you took the pro-choice stance? But here I see you prayed for an end to abortion?

I was just curious as to how you reconcile being pro-choice and yet praying for an end to abortion?

    God bless you.

  3. I am pro-choice. One can be pro-choice and be against abortion. I also love members of the armed forces and military veterans but I’m opposed to war. Life is full of nuances. That is what makes it life.
