A friend of mine contacted me because he said he had “messed up” his computer. His laptop is a Dell 7440 with a BIOS date of April 28, 2016. It’s a dual-core Intel Core i5-4300U with 8 GB of RAM and a modest 256 GB mSATA drive. He said he had been running updates, and something happened. The last time I worked on his computer was sometime in 2019, when I updated it to Linux Mint Cinnamon 22.1 Xia. When it started up it stopped at the BusyBox prompt, requiring manual intervention to repair the disk. The BusyBox error message in the terminal suggested that fsck was the utility to use to repair the damaged file system. The command maintains file system consistency on Linux. I searched for the exact error message. The system message indicated an exit status code of 4. An Internet search revealed that the following command was needed:
fsck -y /dev/sdX
On this laptop, the exact command used was:
fsck -y /dev/sda2
This corrected the problem, and after shutting down the laptop properly, I was able to reboot it into the Cinnamon desktop and log in. My friend wanted me to upgrade his computer to the latest version of Linux Mint Cinnamon 22.3, which I did by following the documentation and opening the Mint Update application. I clicked on Edit in the top menu of the Update Manager and selected “Upgrade to Linux Mint 22.3 Zena.”
When the upgrade finished, a dialog box opened stating, “Your operating system was successfully upgraded.” After a reboot, everything was intact, and all his files were preserved. This is why I love Linux, and in this case, Linux Mint in particular. I can’t remember how many proprietary operating systems I have restored over many years that took much more effort and required much more attention. My friend’s print queue still has five documents waiting to be printed.
When I returned the unit to its owner, he was thrilled. Earlier today, he was sure that something major was in store, and in just a few hours, with some basic Linux file system commands and an overdue upgrade, he was looking at a computer that should last a few more years, provided there is no hardware failure.
This experience highlights Linux’s reliability and flexibility, especially for troubleshooting and upgrading older hardware. This reinforces the advantages of using open-source operating systems, which often offer more straightforward solutions that extend the life of hardware. With the laptop now running smoothly, my friend can continue his work without interruption, reinforcing why I recommend Linux as a favored choice for many of the folks who come to me for technology advice.
