Yesterday, I downloaded the ISO for Ubuntu Studio from one of their mirrors onto my Windows XP Pro desktop at work. I’ve been an email discussion with a number of educators and one of the innovators in this discussion owns a Macintosh with Parallels and he has Feisty Fawn and Ubuntu Studio loaded in a couple of virtual machines. Thursday afternoon Rob (my co-worker) asked me if I had tried it out yet. I said, “no.” I asked him if he wanted me to “burn” the DVD from the ISO for him. He said yes and so for about twenty minutes I struggled with the Nero on my XP desktop to burn a DVD. Nero’s a great product, but lo and behold I couldn’t do it. I could burn CD ISOs but not a DVD ISO. Finally, I transferred the UbuntuStudio ISO from the XP machine to another machine in my office that is running Feisty Fawn and incidentally also has a DVD/RW drive. Voila!!! I burned several DVDs of Ubuntu Studio for my colleagues and I. Therein lies the power of not only Ubuntu but the whole of open source. It’s just way more powerful and you cannot beat the price. Thank you Linus Torvalds, Mark Shuttleworth et al.
