Today I got a chance to tinker with Kino which is one of the open source apps that comes standard on Ubuntu 7.04. I experimented with Kino a couple years ago when I was using Fedora 3 and Fedora 4 on a Dell Inspiron 5100 notebook.
Open Source
Open or closed?
A friend of mine commented on a post I had about Ubuntu and Dell and in that he said that Linux is like the wiki concept. Maybe the wiki concept is more like Linux and open source. Regardless of how one looks at either, open source is an new model of production which favors the wiki model of code and content creation. It seems that the latter has the potential for more power and at the same time has created a great deal of destabilization in the traditional market place. It seems however that this new model is here to stay at least for the short term. Whatever replaces it will grow out of it and not the old industrial age model of a closed system.
Ubuntu Studio
Friday night I happened upon a blog where the writer explained how to install Ubuntu Studio on my laptop. I had just downloaded the ISO on Thursday and was interested but didn’t want to rebuild by laptop.
Dell talks about desktop choice…
I just finished watching a really well produced video on Dell Computer’s website. It is one of the better introductions to Linux I’ve seen. Salient features of Linux include cost, susceptibility to malware and system stability.

Yesterday, I downloaded the ISO for Ubuntu Studio from one of their mirrors onto my Windows XP Pro desktop at work. I’ve been an email discussion with a number of educators and one of the innovators in this discussion owns a Macintosh with Parallels and he has Feisty Fawn and Ubuntu Studio loaded in a couple of virtual machines.

Home server
I’ve been reading about Microsoft’s new home network server. I’ve thought about that sort of thing before. I’m sure they’ll sell a bundle of them. With a little work you can easily build a Linux based home server and probably at a fraction of the cost of the proprietary product.

Open Office v. Microsoft Office
This week a fellow member of the faculty where I work suggested that our use of Open Office with students was actually prohibiting those students from getting employment when they left our school.
